New York did it.
Pennsylvania did it.
Let's Make History Los Angeles. Let's Do it!
Our Growing Presence
The Indian American community in Greater Los Angeles has seen significant growth over the years. As of 2019, our numbers have reached approximately 171,000, making us one of the largest Asian ancestry groups in the metropolitan area. This substantial presence not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Los Angeles but also underscores the importance of our traditions and festivals.
At USIndianSeniors and Valley Indian Seniors Association (VISA), we want to preserve our culture and pass it onto future generations. One of our goals is to have Diwali passed as an official holiday within Los Angeles and honor our heritage.
In the United States, the recognition of Diwali has been on the rise. Notably, Pennsylvania recently became the first U.S. state to designate Diwali as an official state holiday, reflecting the festival's significance and the growing acknowledgment of our cultural heritage.
Given our community's substantial contributions to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Los Angeles, it is both fitting and timely that we advocate for Diwali to be recognized as an official holiday in our city.

In 2024, our amazing Council Member, Nithya Raman, a Valley Indian Seniors Association (VISA) supporter, invited us to the Los Angeles City Hall for a Diwali recognition ceremony.
We want to take this initiative a step further and advocate for city-wide celebrations, educational programs, and community events which are Diwali centric thus enriching the cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
